Cernay

The Historian

Cernay WW I Monument of the Diables Bleus Copyright AdT68 C. Meyer

One finds the village, listed under the name of " Sennenheim " in the archives of Feldbach's convent from 1145.

The village was fortifed in 1268. It was a part of Ferrette's county and Colmar, then in 1324 passed to the " Habsbourg ".

The strong industrialization at the beginning of the 19th century was essentially due to the development of the textile industry.

World War I, more particularly the years 1914 and 1915 cruelly marked the city which was largely destroyed.

Hardly restored, it was again badly damaged in World War II.

The Stroller

Cernay Thann's Door Copyright ARdV

One finds there graves of the " Hallstatt ", as well as Roman vestiges : an ancient military way, a villa and a sculpture.

In 58 B.C., near Cernay, Julius Caesar overcame " Arioviste's Germanics " on the battlefield called " Ochsenfeld " or " Bullocks' Field ".

The rests of the former fortifications are the " Thann's door " of the 13th century and a tower.

Two military cemeteries of the Great War, French and German.

The church Saint Etienne of neo-gothic style was built in 1926.
