27,40 ha of south to south-east facing slopes at between 280 and 400 metres of altitude form the beautiful Schlossberg vineyard, situated in both Katzenthal and Ammerschwihr.
The soil is heavily weathered Turckheim two micas granite strictly identical to its neighbouring Grand Cru vineyards Sommerberg (Niedermorschwihr) and Brand (Turckheim).
The situation of Katzenthal, at the end of a small valley, closed in on three sides and sheltered from dominant winds, means it has a particularly favourable micro-climate which, allied to the quality of the soil, results in optimum conditions for the production of exceptional wines.

The Wineck-Schlossberg is above all a site for the king of Alsace varietals, Riesling, which develops its qualities to the full here. Gewurztraminer is also remarkably suited.

Although the Schlossberg was first mentioned by name in only 1706, the earliest documentary reference to the wines of Katzenthal was 700 years ago, in 1264.
In 1760, a land survey of Ingersheim and Katzenthal shows a vast area of vineyards surrounding the Wineck castle, the "Schlossberg". From the late 17th century onwards, numerous references are made to its renown. The reputation of these slopes is such that it is often used as an ideal illustration of the Alsace vineyards, by Hansi (The belfry in the vines : 1929), by encyclopaedias (Million 1970, Discover France 1972), and by school geography textbooks. The Wineck castle has dominated the vineyards of Katzenthal since 12th century, the only castle in Alsace that is surrounded by vines.

The nature of the soils gives them fruitmess, aroma and incomparable floral character.
