Vineyard Kirchberg source CIVA CIVA

Localities : Ribeauvillé [ Ribeauvillé ]

 Kirchberg

An exceptional site :

Limited to the east by the Grand Cru Geisberg, and to the south by the town of Ribeauville, this vineyard enjoys a south to southwest exposure which, allied to a markedly steep slope, means it is bathed in longer daily sunshine at the time when the grapes mature. Its Triassic subsoil on the lower slopes consists of dolomitic sandstones, marls and dolomites of the Lower Muschelkalk-period ; further up the larger and flatter slope is made of variegated marls locally interbedded with dolomites and gypsum from the Middle Muschelkalk. Clayey soils, often very stony at the steep slope characterize this vineyard situated at an altitude between 270 and 350 metres.

Favoured varietals :

Riesling and Muscat take best advantage of the very sunny aspect of the vineyard, which has a total area of 11,40 hectares. Gewurztrammer and Tokay Pinot Gris are also remarkably successful.

Within living memory...

Mentioned for the first time in 1328 by the famous historian Medard Barth, the Kirchberg is located on one of the finest sites. Wines produced on this slope have long been commercialised with the Kirchberg appellation.

Typical characteristics :

Great finesse and well-structured body : Alsace Grand Cru Kirchberg wines share an elegant bouquet, which develops remarkable aromas with time, distinctive of calcareous marl soil.
