Barr

The Historian

Barr is said to have been an old imperial seigniory.
The devil would have destroyed its castle in 1295.
The castle was captured by the " Armagnac " in 1444.
During the religious wars, in 1592 the castle was dismantled and Barr partially burned-out.
In 1678, the troops of Louis XIV totally destroyed the city.
In 1944, Barr suffered from the very violent fightings between the Germans and the American forces.

The Stroller

Existence of Neolithic vestiges in the valley Saint Ulrich.
Many architectural vestiges justify a visit and even a stay in Barr, to be able to appreciate its rich inheritance.
On Town Hall square, the building of the Town Hall dating from the 17th century with its richly decorated frontages, its roofs and its loggia, a double staircase and wooden galleries.
Many houses of Renaissance style.
A house with oriel window of the 18th century.
Some fountains and old half-timbered houses.
The " Folie Marco's ", an ancient hotel with its frontages and roofs, its interior staircase and its pavilions of angle of style Louis XV, now a museum of Alsatian middle class furniture from the 17th to the 19th century, from Renaissance to Empire and Restoration style.
The catholic Saint Martin's church of the 19th century, former barracks.
The Protestant church with its Roman bell-tower of the 12th century, elevated in the 15th century and its nave of the 19th century.

In the forest, the ruins of the Sainte Anne's vault.
